My "why" I create art

Artist Biography: A Life in Words and Connection

Early Struggles and a Passion Found

Born in 1983 outside Philadelphia, I wasn't handed a typical artistic path. My childhood lacked stability, despite having doctor parents. Their focus on careers left me feeling neglected, and I found solace in the arts. While school presented challenges with ADHD and dyslexia, I gravitated towards self-expression.

Tragedy struck early, with the loss of a girlfriend to suicide and the passing of several close peers during high school. These experiences fueled a deep sense of isolation, reflected in reflected in a lot of my early work.

Art as Therapy and Connection

Art became my anchor. Despite academic struggles, I found a haven at Wyncote Academy, a high school that nurtured my creativity. Even surrounded by supportive peers, the darkness of depression lingered. Withdrawing into my art became a way to cope, pouring emotions into my drawings and paintings.

From Soldier to Artist: Finding My Voice

Following 9/11 and the loss of my grandfather, I enlisted in the Army. While I served as a medic, the artistic urge remained. During my time in service, I created portraits for fellow soldiers, a testament to the power of art in connecting people.

After leaving the military with chronic pain due to injuries sustained while serving and struggles with my depression, I found solace in Buddhism, seeking ways to ease suffering. This was a break through for me. It was during this period that I also met my wife, a beacon of support who encouraged me to pursue art further.

The Birth my "Word-art" or Micro typography/ Descriptive Portraits

While attending Oklahoma State University, I was challenged to depict a hero and their significance. This sparked the creation of my signature style: "descriptive portraits." I created my "Voices of Compassion" series. These works capture a person's essence through the words of others, weaving narratives and emotions into a visual tapestry. It was about 5 people whom I thought made massive impacts on the world through profound empathy and compassion to others. I used there message to create there image.

Viral Success and Artistic Evolution

The "Voices of Compassion" series, featuring portraits of figures who promote empathy, went viral on social media. This launched my artistic career, with commissions pouring in from celebrities, public figures, and organizations like Ripley's Believe It or Not!

Beyond "Word-art," I also explore other artistic avenues, including pencil sketches, watercolors, and an inkblot-inspired style. My work continues to be driven by the themes of connection, loss, and the power of art to transcend suffering.

A Collaborative Spirit

A core aspect of my artistic approach is inclusivity. I frequently involve large groups of people in my work, like the upcoming mental health awareness piece. This project incorporates words submitted by over 1,000 individuals describing their experiences with mental illness.

Inspiration and Family Life

Everything I create revolves around connection, preserving memories, and honoring loved ones. Buddhist symbolism and scientific approaches to alleviating suffering also fuel my artistic vision.

Married with three children, I find inspiration in my family as well. They are a constant reminder of the importance of connection and the power of sharing stories through art.

Why Words?

My portraits go beyond the physical likeness. The words woven into them offer a deeper understanding of the subject – their essence, impact, and the stories people hold dear.

A Journey of Expression

My artistic journey has been marked by challenges and triumphs. Through it all, art has served as a refuge, a way to connect, and a platform to explore the complexities of the human experience.
